Memoir Mentors travels to your location to provide on-site 3- and 4-day writing retreats balancing structure with freedom (average group size is 8-14 people). We’ll work together to tailor the retreat to your group’s interests. Every writer returns home with new work, clarity, and a community that endures.

Workshops
Memoir Mentors can be hired to facilitate group workshops (8-15 people) in the Bay Area or online. Workshops feature craft lessons, curated readings, feedback, and honest, caring conversation. Workshops generally meet for 3 hours every week for 10 consecutive weeks.

Coaching
For writers seeking personal guidance, Memoir Mentors offers one-on-one support tailored to your goals. Together we can shape raw material into story, refine a draft, or strengthen craft—always with the same blend of care and rigor that defines our programs. Space is very limited. Writing samples and statement of focus required.

John founded Memoir Mentors to share what he learned as a longtime Stanford writing instructor and award-winning memoirist. Through workshops, retreats, one-on-one coaching, and speaking engagements he brings together the rigor of craft and the warmth of community. His goal is to help writers turn experience into meaning, whether drafting, revising, or seeking renewal. John believes every life holds a story worth telling, and that writing it with honesty and care can transform both writer and reader.
